Total fire ban in place for Rotorua

10 April 2013

The total fire ban will be lifted on MONDAY.

Between now and the end of April customers will require a Fire Permit to burn in the Rural area.

Those in the urban area will be able to burn preferably in an incinerator with a lid, or a minimum of chicken wire, as a cover.  The fire must be at least 5m from any boundary or building and a fire fighting medium, such as a garden hose, close at hand.

All requests for fire permits will  be dealt with as new requests. Existing fire permits for the 2012/13 season are cancelled, therefore no extensions for existing fire permits will be granted.

18 March 2013

The total fire ban for Rotorua district remains in place. The 10 day forecast is mostly fine with no significant rain on the radar. We need a lot more rain to have a significant influence on our fire danger ratings which are still at 'very high' to 'extreme'.

A total fire ban in now in place for Rotorua district due to the fire risk being extreme.  This includes Department of Conservation land.

No outdoor fires may be lit in either rural or urban areas.  Gas BBQ's may be used but caution is advised.

All existing permits are now invalid and no new permits or extensions will be granted during this time.
