Council on the lookout for next year’s youth council
11 November 2012
Rotorua District Council (RDC) is on the lookout for the city’s future leaders.
The council is seeking applications for the 2013 Rotorua District Youth Council (RDYC).
RDYC meet fortnightly to discuss current youth issues, learn about local government and decision-making, and help give Rotorua youth a voice. Youth councillors also support and organise youth events and activities, and participate in various local and national initiatives.
RDC youth projects officer Jill Campbell says she is looking for a diverse group of 13 to 18 year olds who can offer a youth perspective to council decisions and other issues affecting young people.
“We’re looking for a mix of young people from different walks of life, and interested in community issues.
“We provide them with the opportunity to organise events and gain event management skills and leadership experience, they’ll get involved in the community, and learn a bit about local government while they’re at it.”
Rotorua District Youth Council will meet every second Tuesday during 2013, as well as attend initial training from 8 to10 February.
