Added WOW® at Museum this summer
8 November 2012
Hot on the heels of another hugely successful World of WearableArts™ (WOW) show in Wellington, Rotorua Museum is about to become the new home to an exciting exhibition of the very best costumes from their historic collection.
Off the Wall: World of WearableArt™ Up Close is an innovative and interactive exhibition showcasing some of WOW’s most memorable garments and bringing to life the stories behind them.
On show at the Rotorua Museum from 10 November 2012 until 10 February 2013, this is the first North Island venue on this limited touring schedule.
Deputy director of Rotorua Museum, Pamela Lovis, said she is excited at the timing of the exhibition.
"I hope locals will take advantage of the free entry for Rotorua residents, as well as bringing visiting friends and families to the Museum.”
WOW® founder, Dame Suzie Moncrieff, worked closely with Sir Richard Taylor of Weta Workshop to select the range of amazing pieces.
Sir Richard said the process of selecting for Off the Wall was difficult but great fun.
“Choosing just 30 garments from the WOW collections was near impossible, as they are all phenomenal creations in their own right.”
Off the Wall showcases funky creations from 20,664 plastic collar stays to twelve leather suitcases, from recycled wool sacks to wood, corrugated iron to kitchen utensils or taxidermied birds to sumptuous silks.
With display areas including bizarre bras, UV tents and reflective sections, it will be an adventure for all to visit this unique exhibition at Rotorua Museum. And as the name suggests, this exhibition allows guests to get ‘Up Close’ to all garments on display.
Dame Suzie Moncrieff began WOW in 1987 as a promotion for a small rural art gallery in Nelson. Her vision was to take art off the wall and adorn the human form. Today WOW takes centre stage on the New Zealand calendar as an internationally renowned showcase of creativity and performance. A proud New Zealand event, it now attracts over a third of its entrants internationally, giving the show a global flavour.
Dame Suzie Moncrieff will be visiting Rotorua Museum on Saturday 17 November to host two exclusive events. Tickets for a high tea with Dame Suzie or an intimate tour of Off the Wall exhibition hosted by Dame Suzie can be purchased at the Rotorua Museum reception or phone Naiomi Murgatroyd on 07 351 8055.
