Seventeen young people aged between 13 and 18 years form the Rotorua District Youth Council (RDYC). The council was established in 2001 after a major youth consultation project, Te Puna Rangatahi.
Youth councillors
- bring the perspective and opinions of young people to Council
- discuss and promote solutions to issues that affect young people
- write and present submissions on issues that affect young people
- share information and experiences
- learn about how Council works
- get involved in events, conferences and projects
- attend regular monthly meetings.

You can apply to be a youth councillor
We call for applications at the end of the year. Most youth councillors serve a one-year term.
- You need to be between 13 and 20 years old.
- You need to have a good range of youth connections in the district.
- You need skills and qualities which would benefit the Youth Council, like the ability to work in a team, enthusiasm for reading and analysing documents and the confidence to discuss issues.
