Our Identity

Rotorua District Council is the local government organisation for Rotorua District. Elected members (mayor, councillors, and community board members) and staff work towards achieving social, environmental, economic and cultural wellbeing for the community. Some of Council’s functions include

  • providing infrastructure for the likes of roading, refuse disposal, sewerage and water systems
  • planning for the way land in the district is used
  • regulating the health of the environment
  • providing and managing facilities for recreation and culture and social
  • promoting the district for tourism, events and other economic development
  • services specifically required under government legislation
  • and much much more, as shown elsewhere on this website.

Council's mission is about “shaping a great future together”.
We work hard to build on our reputation for visionary leadership and open active democracy.
We strive to achieve multicultural partnerships with special emphasis on our relationship with tangata whenua (our local Maori people), sustainable community services, and ongoing community and economic development.
We are constantly undertaking activities and projects that enhance the quality of life for our residents and that provide a rich world class experience for every visitor to our district.
