Tauranga Direct / Pyes Pa Road gorge construction continuing

Works to improve safety in the Mangorewa/Kaharoa Gorge on SH36 (Tauranga Direct and Pyes Pa roads) between Rotorua and Tauranga are 
continuing. The road is expected to remain closed to all traffic, on weekdays between 9am and 4pm, for another six weeks while blasting work is being undertaken. The road will re-open after this time, although works will continue for the rest of the year and minor delays can be expected.
At present blasting operations are gradually lowering the road’s peak and widening is taking place at the end of the project with bank cutbacks being made.
