Elections
Rotorua District Council comprises a mayor and 12 councillors elected at three-year intervals.
For the 2010 elections voters will elect the mayor and councillors 'at large' (ie no separate wards). There is also the Rotorua Lakes Community Board which comprises 6 members - 4 are elected and 2 are appointed (councillors).
Candidates for the council do not have to be residents of Rotorua to stand for election, however they must be parliamentary electors and New Zealand citizens. Candidates therefore do not have to live in the district or community they wish to stand for.
Elected members come from all walks of life. In a democracy, a council should have a diverse range of qualifications and experience.
Candidates can stand for either a territorial authority or a regional council but the law prevents anyone from standing for both a territorial authority and a regional council. Candidates can stand for mayor, for council, and for the community board.
The elections for the mayor, councillors and the Rotorua Lakes Community Board will take place this year on 9 October 2010.
