Mayor and Elected Members
Rotorua District Council comprises the position of mayor, and 12 councillors elected 'at large' in local elections held every three years. Elections for the current 2010-13 term were held 9 October 2010. The next elections will be held in 2013.
There is also a Rotorua Lakes Community Board with four members elected and two appointed by Council.
Elected members are advised by the chief executive (who may seek additional external advice on matters such as legal opinions) and by staff.
Resources for elected members are also available from bodies such as Local Government New Zealand (LGNZ), and other professional organisations. However, first and foremost, elected members are advised by the community who they represent, through a range of formal and informal consultation processes.
