State Highways
State highways 5, 30, 30A, 33, 36 and 38 service the Rotorua District. Council manages these highways under delegation from the New Zealand Transport Agency (NZTA).
A roading partnership
Crown-owned NZTA manages the country’s state highways, overseeing construction and maintenance of more than 10 000 kilometres.
However, in the early 1990s Rotorua District Council and the then Transit New Zealand established a partnership which resulted in a one stop shop for roading issues. Council staff work under the umbrella of NZTA policies and procedures, and local knowledge aids decision making.
This delegation of functions to the district is positive for Council, district residents and the New Zealand Transport Agency.
