Recycling Centres
Recycling – Free of charge
No hazardous wastes i.e. oils, chemicals, refrigeration units, car bodies are accepted at Transfer Stations. Commercial and Out of District Refuse are also not accepted.
Current Recycling Services
Rotorua District Council currently provides drop off recycling services at a dedicated recycling services at a dedicated recycling centre in Te Ngae Road, as well as at the Atiamuri Landfill and the Council’s transfer stations at Mamaku, Reporoa, Tarawera and Okere.
Materials collected include plastics, paper and cardboard, glass, tin and aluminium cans. In addition, there are some private recycling service providers who principally collect paper and cardboard from the commercial sector. This covers about 10% of the total waste stream.

In addition, the Council has an obligation under the waste Minimisation Act to undertake a waste assessment for all waste services containing a description of existing services and forecast of future demands; an assessment of options available for meeting future demands; and statements as to the council’s role in providing waste services.

- 1.00pm to 4.30pm
Tarawera Transfer Station is open:
- Wednesday and the last day of every Public Holiday period (except Christmas Day)
- 1.00pm to 4.30pm
- Sunday 1.00pm to 4.30pm
Okere Transfer Station only:
- Wednesday and the last day of every Public Holiday period (except Christmas Day)
- 1.00pm to 4.30pm
- Sunday 10.00am to 4.30pm
Cost
- Landfill charges apply for rubbish disposal
- There is no charge for recycling
