Angle parking
Rotorua’s central business district has angle parking. Unless a vehicle is being loaded or unloaded, it should be parked so that the front of the vehicle is facing into the kerb.
Broken yellow lines
Broken yellow lines closer than 1 metre to the kerb or edge of the road mean you cannot stop, wait, or park at any time.
They are placed where parking may compromise the safety of pedestrians or other road users – for example, near intersections and pedestrian crossings.
Bus stands/parks
A bus stand or park has a blue sign showing a ‘P’ and a white bus symbol. A bus can park here and the driver can leave the bus unattended.
Only a bus can park in a bus stand/park.
Bus stops
Only a bus may stop at a bus stop.
A bus stop is only for setting down and picking up passengers.
Even a bus cannot park on a bus stop.
Caravans/camper vehicles
No person shall stop, stand or park any caravan, camper vehicle, house bus or mobile home on any road for any continuous period exceeding seven days without the prior written consent of Council.
No person is permitted to use a caravan, camper vehicle, house bus or mobile home parked in accordance with clause 21.1 as a place of sleeping accommodation.
Rotorua District Council Traffic By-law 2008, clause 21
Back to top
Displaying vehicles on the street
No person shall use any public place for the keeping, placing or parking of any vehicle whether for sale, exhibition, demonstration, advertisement, signage or storage, except where from time to time Council may determine by resolution an area set aside for that purpose.
Rotorua District Council Traffic By-law 2008, clause 22
Back to top
Double parking
You must not stop or park a vehicle next to another parked vehicle ('double-park') on a roadway.
Fire hydrants
A driver must not stop, stand, or park the vehicle within 500mm of a fire hydrant or, if the fire hydrant is below the road surface, within 500mm of the centre of the cover of the hydrant.
Heavy motor vehicle parking
No person shall stop, stand or park a heavy motor vehicle for a period of more than one hour in any public place where there is adjacent residential zoned land on either side of the road, provided however that it shall not be an offence to stop, stand or park such vehicle for such period as is reasonably required for the purpose of loading or unloading that vehicle in the course of trade.
Rotorua District Council Traffic By-law 2008, clause 16
Back to top
Park as close as practicable
Under normal circumstances you must park parallel to the road and as close to the left kerb as is possible.
Parking meters
In place throughout the central business district.
Policed 9.00am–5.00pm Monday to Friday, and 9.00am–midday Saturday.
Free of charge Saturday afternoon, Sunday and public holidays.
Maximum parking time of 2 hours at each meter.
Parking on flush median
A flush median is an area in the middle of the road marked by diagonal white lines. Like a traffic island, a flush median separates vehicles, provides a safe place for turning vehicles and provides a safe place for pedestrians.
You may only drive on the flush median as part of a turning manoeuvre. It should never be used for overtaking or parking.
Red light at the rear
A heavy goods vehicle and any vehicle with a flat deck must have a rear red light shining when parked during the hours of darkness.
Stopping restrictions
Some of the city's roads have 'no stopping’ signs, which show a red diagonal across a blue background. You may not stop in these areas at any time.
Taxi stands
If you are not driving a taxi you may not stop on a taxi stand.
Taxis can only be on taxi stands when available for hire and being used in accordance with the Transport Services Licensing Act 1989.
The driver must be in the vehicle when it is on a taxi stand.
Timed parking restriction signs
A parking restriction that is indicated by a sign incorporating the letter ‘P’ on the top of the sign, or on a sign that relates to a loading zone, applies between the hours of 8.00am and 6.00pm on days other than public holidays, unless otherwise specified on the sign or on a supplementary sign. The number under the 'P' shows the parking time limit.
Every block of the central business district has a small bank of P15 parking spaces, so that parks are always available for short stops.
Vehicle entrances or exits
You may not stop or park a vehicle on a road at any time if it blocks a vehicle entrance, or if it is within one metre of either side of the entrance, even if you stay in the vehicle.
Vehicle loading zones
You may stop on a loading zone if:
the loading zone is the correct one for your vehicle
you are loading or unloading
you do not leave the vehicle for more than 5 minutes.
Vehicle repairs
No person shall park any vehicle on any road to carry out repairs unless those repairs are of both minor and urgent nature.
