New Strategy

Rotorua Sustainable Economic Growth Strategy Cover

Background

The Rotorua Sustainable Economic Growth Strategy forms part of the 2011 refresh of the Rotorua Economic Strategy. The refresh process was triggered by a desire for increased effective communication and collaboration between Rotorua district business leaders and key agencies, including Rotorua District Council, and agreement around the need to lift the overall economic performance of the district.

A series of workshops with Rotorua stakeholders throughout 2010/11 were held. The consultation and planning process was assisted by guidance and support from a Project Reference Group - an independent group comprised of representatives from RDC and Rotorua Business Leaders Group. The project was funded and managed by Rotorua District Council. On 13 September 2011 the Economic and Regulatory Services Committee meeting adopted the Strategy.

Purpose

The Rotorua Sustainable Economic Growth Strategy was developed to ensure the Rotorua economy grows faster and to align and focus existing economic development strategies by setting a clear, communicable economic development direction for Rotorua. That direction is to lift the reputation of Rotorua as:

  • a leader in the forestry and wood processing, tourism, geothermal and agricultural sectors
  • a preferred lifestyle destination
  • a sustainable and innovative district across all sectors
  • an attractive and easy place to invest and do business
  • a district with an enabling regulatory environment.

This direction is designed to contribute to the district vision of “Rotorua: Living the dream – world class in every way.”

Key Objectives

The strategy identifies the following key objectives for Rotorua over the next five years:

  1. Changing the reputation of Rotorua:
  2. Lifting performance of the local Rotorua economy:
  3. Raising living and skills standards:

The Strategy focuses on outcomes which Rotorua can actually influence and where best to allocate its resources, rather than concentrating on wider issues that contribute to the macro-economic environment.
