Garden Sheds

Siting a garden shed
Follow these guidelines from the Building Act 2004 if you are siting a garden shed or similar small building on your property.

  • If your shed is less than 10 square metres in area, and is not closer than its own height to any legal boundary or other residential accommodation, it will not require a building consent.
  • If the shed is less than 10 square metres and is closer than its own height to a boundary it will need a building consent, and may require resource consent.
  • Neighbour consent to site accessory buildings close to legal boundaries is almost always a condition of a building and resource consent. A neighbour has a right to refuse to give consent.
