In 1964 the then Prime Minister, Rt Hon Sir Keith Holyoake, officially opened Rotorua Airport on its current site.

Rotorua District Council assumed ownership of the airport in July 2002.

Today the airport and its key assets are owned and maintained by Rotorua District Council while airport operations are handled by a stand-alone company, Rotorua Regional Airport Ltd (RRAL). While RRAL's sole shareholder is the Rotorua District Council, airport operations and business remain the responsibility of RRAL's board of directors and management.

The airport currently has domestic services to and from Auckland (40 minutes), Wellington (65 minutes), and Christchurch (1 hour 45 minutes) and Queenstown, with connections to many other destinations.

The Rotorua International Airport is now also the international gateway to the Central North Island with a direct trans-Tasman service which started on 12 December 2009.  Air New Zealand operates twice-weekly flights between Sydney (Australia) and Rotorua (approx 3 hours 15 minutes) using Airbus A320 aircraft.

The airport is located approximately an hour's driving time from Tauranga, Whakatane and Taupo and one and a half hours from Hamilton.  It is just two and a half hours from Auckland.
