Air quality and home heating

Domestic fires are a major cause of poor air quality which occurs at certain times of the year in Rotorua - especially during cold weather.

The Rotorua Air Quality Action Plan is coordinated by the Bay of Plenty Regional Council (Environment Bay of Plenty) with the support of Rotorua District Council. It sets out 15 different actions to improve air quality. On 1 July 2009, Environment Bay of Plenty began a programme of work to manage, coordinate and implement the actions.

The first phase of implementation focuses on promoting community awareness of the air quality issue, and promoting simple actions that people in Rotorua can take.

There are simple solutions that everyone can undertake regardless of income.  The campaign is called 'Choose Clean Heat – Protect Our Lungs' and promotes clean home heating choices like:

  1. Heat pumps
  2. Pellet fires
  3. Clean wood burners

Having your house insulated will make it even warmer. There are also government subsidies available to help you pay for insulation and clean heating.  The Energy Efficiency and Conservation Authority (EECA) manages these subsidies.
