What happens when I flush the toilet?
When you flush your toilet, the sewage flows through pipes in your house and on your section.  Once it passes your property boundary, it then becomes the Council's responsibility.   They are required to reticulate and treat the sewage or wastewater.

The sewage flows down underground pipes, called gravity mains, in a reticulation system to various collection points called 'pump stations'.  Pump stations are used to pump water up rising mains, or pipes that travel 'up-hill'.  This process is continually repeated until the wastewater finds its way to the treatment plant.  There are around 53 pump stations throughout Rotorua and Ngongotaha.
