Parking meters are placed throughout the CBD.  They are policed from 9am until 5pm Monday to Friday, and from 9am to Midday on a Saturday.

You may only park at a meter for a maximum of 2 hours.  The vehicle must then be moved to another meter, or to another area of the city.  This is to ensure there is an adequate turn over of traffic.  Council aims to have 1 parking space in every 7 available for motorists to park.

Cost

  • 20 cents = 12 minutes
  • 50 cents = 30 minutes
  • $1 = 1 hour
  • $2 = 2 hours

Pay and Display Machine

Cost as per parking meter fees.

Council operates one pay and display machine which has been installed in Haupapa Street in the parking area outside the Rotorua District Council Civic Centre and the RSA.

How does the Pay and Display Machine work?

Before placing money in the machine check the fees and maximum stay, which is clearly displayed on the panel on the front of the machine.  Please note:  if you do over-feed the machine it will not issue change.

Insert a valid coin into the machine for the amount of time you wish to park.  As each coin is inserted the expiry time on the display will change.  When the appropriate expiry time is reached, or the maximum parking time is reached, press the green button.  The parking receipt will be printed.

The printed ticket must be displayed printed side up on the dashboard of the vehicle, or in a prominent place so as to be clearly visible from the outside of the vehicle and as close as is possible to the front windscreen. If the details (expiry time, date etc) are not clearly visible, an infringement notice of $40 maybe issued.

Note – You are able to use a pay and display meter prior to the machine starting to record.  For example:

  • If you park in a pay and display area at 8.30am and that area is enforced from 9am, you are able to use the machine at that time and the machine will automatically credit you from 9am.  This saves you having to return to the vehicle at 9am to pay for your parking.

Caution – If you are using a pay and display machine towards the end of an enforcement period and put too much money in the machine it may credit the time to the following day.

A pay and display machine will only record time over to the following day if it is a time zone that allows for you to stay for longer than the period remaining to be paid for that day.

For example:

  • If you put a two dollar coin into a one hour meter, and there is two hours left in the enforcement time, you will not be issued change or extra time as you are only allowed to stay in that park for one hour.
  • If you put a two dollar coin into a two hour meter, and there is one hour left in the enforcement time, you will be issued extra time for the following day as you are allowed to stay in that park for two hours.

Please note - Sometimes the machines will not recognise a coin when you put it in the machine, If you notice you have not been credited time for the coin you have entered, check the 'Change/Rejected Coin' slot for your coin.

 Faulty Meters or Machines

If a meter, or the pay and display machine, appear to be faulty please report the matter to the Parking Services Section of Council as soon as possible.  The office will require the following information:

  • The number of the parking meter, or location of the pay and display machine
  • The amount of money that you put into the meter/machine
  • The date and time of your arrival
  • Your anticipated departure time

The details of any faults will be passed to the Meter Technician, who will arrange for the problem to be investigated immediately.

Remember you may not stay in excess of the maximum parking time at either a parking meter or a pay and display machine, otherwise you maybe issued an infringement notice.
