Rural Area:
A Restricted Fire Season operates from 1 October to 30 April in the rural area of the Rotorua District. Permits are required for the lighting of all fires in the open air, including incinerator fire, barbecues or hangis. Permits are issued through the Engineering Department, Rotorua District Council. Please allow 24 hours in order for your proposed fire site to be inspected.
Urban Area:
An Open Fire Season operates in the urban area of the Rotorua District (refer shaded area of map). The lighting of fires in the open air is neither prohibited nor restricted and permits are not required.
These restrictions apply all year round unless a Prohibited Fire Season is imposed and publicly advertised, during which period the lighting of fires in the open air is prohibited throughout the District. This notice is declared under Section 22 of the Forest and Rural Fires Act 1997 and the Rotorua District Vegetation in Urban Areas Fire Prevention Bylaw 1992, and applies until further notice. Anybody contravening these regulations and exposing forest and property within the District to loss by fire is liable to prosecution and to action for recovery of any damages that may be caused.
