Council maintains a central dog pound and stock holding area and undertakes dog and wandering stock control in the District. The dog control content of the animal control activity is partially funded by general rates.

The cost of controlling wandering stock within the District is met from the general rates as the community at large benefits from the service.

Council recognises "selected dog owner" status by giving a rebate on the dog registration fee to owners who successfully complete a multi-choice examination based on the "NZ Dog Owners Manual".
