Air transport in Rotorua began in 1930. The Lands and Survey Department granted permission to establish an aerodrome on the land. The land now is known as the residential area of Fenton Park.
Rapid growth in demand for air transport services ensued. In 1958, the Government formally announced its approval for the new airport's construction on the Rotokawa site.
The Prime Minister, Rt. Hon. K.J. Holyoake opened the Rotorua Airport, in October 1964.
It became increasingly apparent to Council that the airport meant much more to Rotorua than just a commercial enterprise, and that full community ownership of the airport would provide the best longer-term strategic investment capability.
In order to carry out much needed upgrading, and to give an immediate measure of safety to the visitor industry and other employment sectors, Council set about negotiating the purchase of Central Avion Holdings' 50% shareholding. In July 2002, Council concluded an agreement for purchase thereby giving Council full ownership.
Council is now in a position to take the airport forward. Initially, Council wants to maintain the airport's operational service capability, in particular the ability to handle domestic jet aircraft (Boeing 737-300) services, by extending the runway and at the same time carrying out some much needed improvements to terminal and parking facilities. The initial focus is on the runway extension scheduled for completion by 1 March 2003.
