The work at the intersection near the Court House is in response to a continuing unacceptably high crash rate.
An extended median strip will limit traffic on Tutanekai St to left turns only into Arawa St, and traffic on Arawa St to left turns only into Tutanekai St.
RDC works manager, Peter Dine, says the restrictions will reduce the number of turning movements at the intersection, which along with straight through traffic on Tutanekai St, is the cause of the high crash rate.
He says the intersection has long been identified by the Land Transport Agency as one that needed addressing.
“The intersection will become far less hazardous for both motorists and pedestrians. Works will be undertaken at night to minimise disruption, but motorists are urged to take care when passing this area.”
Work will begin on 21 July, weather permitting.
