In a panel discussion on Sunday 20 July at 2pm three pivotal people in the evolving story of now nationally acclaimed Rotorua Museum will tell stories of their time in office.
The discussion, which takes place at Rotorua Museum, is part of a series timed to celebrate the centenary of the Bath House building, will allow Don Stafford, Ian Rockel and John Perry to focus on light-hearted memories.
Don Stafford held the position of Curator between 1968 and 1970 and is recalled as a charismatic figure who got Rotorua Museum, then located in the south wing of the historic building, up and running. His intimate links with the community brought a flood of goodwill donations.
Ian Rockel held the helm at Rotorua Museum between 1970 and 1987 and assiduously collected important material during his tenure. He wrote Taking the Waters, an acclaimed book on spas in New Zealand, and placed spa culture firmly in the mix of the Rotorua story.
John Perry was appointed director of the then Rotorua Art Gallery in 1978 and organised groundbreaking exhibitions over the years. Like his predecessors, he developed lasting relationships with Te Arawa.
Perry oversaw the amalgamation of Rotorua Art Gallery and Rotorua Museum in 1988, and held the position of director of the new institution until 1997. His passion remained art and the Fine Arts Collection held by Rotorua Museum is an enduring legacy.
