Community and public arts policies

Rotorua offers a wide range of opportunities to be involved in arts and cultural activities. Many of the arts and cultural spaces and options available have resulted from Councils commitment to community aspirations.
Arts initiatives supported by Council and in partnership with the Rotorua Trust, Creative Communities, Civic Arts Trust, Rotorua Arts Village and community artists, enable art programmes which contribute to making Rotorua a culturally diverse place.

Rotorua District Council has two arts policies supporting community and public arts projects and artists.  These policies are managed and implemented by the Community Arts Officer.

The Arts and Cultural Policy (2007) sets out Council’s commitment to cultural well-being and recognises the economic and social value of arts and culture to the district.

Council continues to work in partnership with a range of stakeholders. It plays a vital role in leading, planning and coordinating arts and cultural activities including Arts Residencies Rotorua, the Arts Conference, Music at Band Rotunda, Childrens Day, Fish Out of Water, Magma short film festival.

Many arts and cultural projects, events, artists’ profiles, Arts Trail, arts and crafts organisations, events and news are listed on the:

Copies of the Rotorua Arts Trail and Creative Rotorua Directory are available from the Library, Rotorua Arts Village Experience, City Focus and Council.

Toi Rotorua : Arts and Culture in the Volcanic Heartland is a bi-monthly newsletter on community and public arts projects and funding opportunities.

Art in Public Places Policy

The Art in Public Places Policy 2008 promotes public art and encourages involvement in public arts projects.

A key aspect for Council is the integration of art into capital works projects. The Art in Public Places Guidelines is set out criteria by which proposals for the commissioning or acquisitioning of art works for the public domain can be assessed. The policy recognises the civic and economic benefit that public art works can bring to the community.
