Grants and Funding Information

  • Council administers a range of funding and resources to support local community organisations and activities, including grants, loans and contracts, and subsidised accommodation in community venues
  • Council manages central Government funding for arts and recreation organisations through Creative Communities and other grants programmes
  • Council provides computerised funding databases at several public venues
  • Council operates a rates remission policy for charitable organisations
  • Council holds bi-annual funding expos.

Fundview and Breakout

Funding information resources Fundview and Breakout are available at the Rotorua District Council Civic Centre, Rotorua District Library, Mokoia Community Association, Citizens Advice Bureau, Te Whare Hauora o Ngongotaha, Te Waiariki Purea Trust, and Rotorua Community Youth Centre.

Fundview is New Zealand’s primary source of information on funding for voluntary organisations in our community.

  • Holds information about more than 600 funding schemes
  • Funding comes from government, local government, statutory and philanthropic trusts, gaming trust and some service organisations
  • Information includes eligibility, details about funder, application process and contact details
  • Includes a ‘detailed help’ resource to assist new and inexperienced applicants.

Rates Remissions

Charitable organisations may be eligible to apply for rates remissions for the land they occupy. Council has a policy for grants in lieu of rate remissions for charitable organisations that lease land.

Community Asset Development Fund

The Community Asset Development Fund is available for capital works - for the purchase of a new community asset, or replacement of an existing community asset (including additions). Council will consider requests from:

  • community groups, cultural and arts groups, and sports and recreational groups
  • schools (under certain criteria)
  • marae that are available for public use for a variety of purposes, where there is no similar facility (such as a hall) in the area.

2011 funding round closed on Friday 4 November. 2012 funding round open on Monday 27 August and closes on Friday 2 November.

Creative Communities

Creative Communities Rotorua is a partnership between Creative New Zealand and Rotorua District Council. The scheme’s main focus is to stimulate and provide support to arts and culture projects which:

  • broaden community involvement;
  • support the diversity and cultural traditions of local communities, enriching and promoting their uniqueness and cultural diversity;
  • and enable and encourage young people (less than 18 yrs) to engage with and actively participate in the arts.

Each year, the Assessment Committee conducts two funding rounds. The 2012 main funding round will open on 30 January and close on 9 March.

The 2011 Discretionary Round closed on 30 September 2011 and $10,530 was distributed.

NOTE: Applicants can either

  • download the application form, complete the application, save as an attachment, and return the completed attachment to community policy@rdc.govt.nz; enclosing any other relevant attachments (e.g. financial accounts, letters of support etc);
  • download the application form, print it out, complete the relevant sections and mail it back with any supporting information;
  • or collect an application form from one of five locations listed below, complete the relevant sections, and mail it back with any supporting information.

    Creative Communities Rotorua Assessment Committee

    The committee membership term is now three years. As members are not elected in the same year, the committee always retains some experienced members. The current committee is Jill Walker (Chairperson), Richard Marshall, Amiria Savea, Elise Francis, Harry Chhagan, Siani te Riini, Julie Calnan and Rene Mitchell (Te Arawa representative.)

    Community Grants Scheme

    This fund is available to support the work of voluntary organisations which provide community projects and services within the Rotorua district. Priority is given to projects and services which actively involve community members and are targeted to meet local needs. The scheme does not fund capital items but may fund:

    • administration and operational costs
    • initial project costs
    • training costs for paid and unpaid personnel
    • public education events.

    Applications for 2012 funding round open 27 February 2012 and closes 13 April 2012.

    2012 is the last year Community Grants will be available on an annual basis. From 2013 grants will be allocated on a 3 year cycle. Applications will be invited for a grant payable annually for 3 years. i.e organisation X is granted $1400 per year for 3 years to assist with operational costs. They will be paid $1400 in 2013, 2014, 2015.

    Community Grants Assessment Committee

    The Committee consists of 3 councillors and one Te Arawa standing committe representative. 

    Current committee members are Julie Calnan, Mark Gould and Rene Mitchell, with one position currently vacant.

    Grants Policies

    Council is committed to annually allocating funds and resources to support community initiatives.  These grants are managed through the Community Policy and Resources division of Council.

    The disbursement of grants assists council in providing for the wellbeing of the community.

    Community Safety Projects Fund

    The 2011/12 round of the Community Safety Projects Fund is now closed.

    The next round of the fund will open August 2012.

    All applicants must meet with Community Safety Projects Officer Amy Duckett, prior to submitting an application form. Please contact Amy on 351 8172 or email amy.duckett@rdc.govt.nz for an appointment time.
