The Social Monitor Update 2007 presents information on key social trends in the Rotorua District. Together with Council's economic, environmental and cultural monitoring programmes, the Social Monitor helps paint a picure of changes in social wellbeing. Monitoring progress towards sustainable development is a requirement of Council under the Local Government Act 2002 and will assist in tracking how Rotorua is progressing towards achieving 'Bright Future Rotorua' community outcomes.
Council's social monitoring programme was developed over the period 1998-2002 in consultation with the Rotorua community. A detailed set of social indicators was selected on the basis of relevance, availability, and reliability. Data sources include government agencies, community surveys and census results. Data is accessed as soon as it is available and an annual social monitor update is compiled each year. The next census will be undertaken in 2011 and will provide more up-to-date information on some trends.
Topics covered by Council's social monitoring programme include:
- Health
- Housing
- Education
- Standard of living
- Community safety
- Social connection
- Democracy
