In May 2002, and following an extensive process of consultation, Council published the Tarawera Variation to the District Plan. This significant piece of environmental heritage protection policy applies to almost 25% of the land area of Rotorua District.
The plan recognises the national and regional significance of the physical and cultural heritage of the area covered whilst allowing and promoting concepts of sustainable development. The plan is currently at appeal in the Environment Court.
